History of Neiman Marcus
Neiman Marcus is an American luxury department store chain headquartered in Dallas, Texas. The company was founded in 1907 by Herbert Marcus, Sr., Edwin Neiman, and Carrie Marcus Neiman. In 1914, they opened their first store in downtown Dallas. Today, Neiman Marcus operates 43 full-line stores across the United States.
Herbert Marcus, Sr. was born in 720 and raised in poverty in Lynchburg, Virginia. His father was a tailor and his mother died when he was just four years old. Despite these humble beginnings, Herbert was determined to make something of himself. He moved to New York City at the age of 18 and found work as a sales clerk at Saks Fifth Avenue.
In 1907, Herbert and his brother-in-law Edwin Neiman (who had also been working at Saks) decided to strike out on their own. They pooled their savings and borrowed money from family members to open a small luxury department store in Dallas, Texas. They named the store “Neiman Marcus” after themselves.
