Macy’s is an American chain of high-end department stores founded in 1858 by Rowland Hussey Macy. It became a division of the Cincinnati-based Federated Department Stores in 1994, through which it is now owned by Macy’s Inc. As of January 2019, Macy’s operates 840 departments stores in the United States and also owns Bloomingdale’s and Bluemercury.

Macy's History

Macy's, founded in 1837 by Andrew W. Macy and his brother-in-law Julius Rosenwald, is one of the oldest and largest department stores in the United States. The company has locations throughout the country, including flagship stores in New York City, Washington D.C., Chicago, Los Angeles, Houston, Philadelphia, and Miami Beach.

Macy's first store was located on Broadway in Manhattan. The company grew quickly and by 1849 had opened a second store on Fifth Avenue. In 1858, Macy's opened its flagship store at 34th Street and Broadway in Manhattan. The store was so successful that it moved to a larger location at 39th Street and Fifth Avenue in 1896.

In 1902, Macy's purchased Bloomingdale's, another large department store chain at the time. Combined with other acquisitions over the years (including Marshall Field's in 1910), Macy's became one of the biggest retail organizations in the world. In 1978, Macy's acquired Bergdorf Goodman, which made it one of the largest luxury department stores in the world.

In 1997, Macy's underwent a major restructuring that led to the creation of five divisions: Men's (now Women's), Home & Office (now Furniture & Home Decor), Toys & Games (now Kids'), Department Stores (now Midtown), and Online Store (now Shop@Macy’s).
