History of AO World

The history of AO.com World can be traced back to 1892 when the Bolton Electrical Supply Company was founded. The company grew rapidly and by 1930 had become one of the leading electrical retailers in England. In 1966, AO.com World merged with another electrical retailer, Associated Electrical Industries (AEI). AEI had been founded in 1919 and was one of the largest retail electrical companies in the UK. The merger created a company that was market leader in electrical supplies and services across England.

In 1986, AO.com World acquired an interest in Main Electrical Retailers (MERS), a large electrical retailer based in Newcastle-upon-Tyne. MERS became the second largest subsidiary of AO World and played a significant role in the company’s growth over the next two decades. In 2003, AO World acquired IKEA’s stake in MERS and became 100% owner of the business. This acquisition gave AO.com World access to IKEA’s strong distribution network and increased its presence on high street shops throughout England. IKEA continued to operate MERS as a separate business within AO.com World until it was sold to Sainsbury’s plc in 2016.

Since 2007, AO.com World has been headquartered at its new headquarters located in Bolton town centre. The facility includes state-of-the-art showrooms and offices for product management, marketing, sales and customer care teams.
